MRS Mini Shark

Description

The MRS Mini Shark and Mini Shark XL is a new concept for a packraft. Normally you need to choose between white water (models like the MRS Microraft, MRS Viking, MRS Viking/Viking Evo and MRS Alligator/Alligator 2S)  or touring capability (MRS Nomad, MRS Surveyor). Now there is a packraft that does both, the MRS Mini Shark, available in two sizes, regular and XL.

The MRS Mini Shark has a more streamlined hull and a slightly upturned bow, which helps performance through the water and improves it’s agility. The tube is smaller than other models which makes it easier to climb back aboard in the event you find yourself in the water – a feature especially useful when using in white water. The seat is a little lower than in other packrats to provide a lower center of gravity which makes it easier to keep balance in white water, offsetting the negative impact the smaller tube may otherwise have on stability. The spraydeck can be half-opened by zipper, allowing gear to be stored at the stern (rear). All this whilst also being suitable for longer distance flat water adventures.

The tube is made of ultra tough and durable 420D TPU coated nylon and needs to be inflated to 3psi air pressure to ensure optimal performance. As such, it is recommended that an electric pump which can reach that pressure is used for inflation.

With the smaller tube design, the higher air pressure will ensure that the hull has sufficient rigidity in white water to ensure optimal control and translation of movement from the paddler to the packraft.

About MRS TPU fabrics:

Currently, there are many types of TPU-coated fabrics in the market, which look quite similar to the TPU materials used by MRS. However, the materials used by MRS significantly exceed industry average standards, with strict requirements for various performance metrics and stability. To ensure only the best materials are used, MRS implements rigorous testing procedures and selection criteria, eliminating materials that do not meet the required standards.

MRS collaborates with multiple experienced global suppliers, who spare no effort in meeting MRS’s quality standards. Only materials that meet MRS’s stringent testing criteria are used in their products. The high standards extend lifespan of materials under appropriate maintenance conditions, unexpected issues will be reduced during the valuable trips. This ensures higher performance within certain physical limits.

Material formulations and specifications are designed by MRS and tailored according to each specific product usage requirement. Suitable combinations are tested from numerous material grades. For instance, materials for the Ultra Light series prioritize foldability, while being lightweight, the fabric base and TPU are also softer. On the other hand, materials for the White Water series focus more on durability, impact resistance, and peel strength.

Of course, even high-quality TPU-coated fabrics have limitations. Proper maintenance and appropriate use are necessary to maximise longevity.
